Red cards, hat-tricks, and top goalscorers: a brief history of West Ham vs Manchester United
Manchester United make the trip to London this weekend as they prepare to face West Ham. David Moyes’ side has been a typically hard nut to crack for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with last season’s encounters closely contested both home and away.
Further back, there have been some memorable moments for Manchester United against the Hammers. In 2017, Manchester United won the first game between the two sides at the London Stadium, with goals from Juan Mata and Zlatan Ibrahimovic guiding the Reds to victory.
Affairs between the two sides have historically been charged and, to no one’s surprise, Manchester United have had players sent off against West Ham on four occasions in the Premier League. The most recent dismissal came in 2015 when Luke Shaw was sent off in a 2-2 draw at Upton Park.
Wayne Rooney suffered the same fate in the reverse fixture that season, with Luis Nani (2008) and Nicky Butt (1996) also given their marching orders against West Ham.
Rooney is also one of two players to score a Premier League hat-trick against West Ham (2011), with midfield legend Paul Scholes also doing so (2000). Rooney is also the top goalscorer for Manchester United in this fixture, finding the net on 12 occasions.
In 146 meetings between the two clubs in all competitions, Manchester United have run out winners on 69 occasions, drawn 32 times, and lost 45 times.
Solskjaer will be hoping to made that 70 wins on Sunday as he eyes to extend Manchester United’s promising start to the Premier League season.
